Above Katavolos

Sarah’s House, completed in 2022, sits high above the Ionian Sea, looking South to Corfu Town. The gardens have evolved since then, but the whole idea has been to retain the sense of a simple, though contemporary, house sitting in an existing olive grove.

The structure and position of the olive trees shaped both the positioning of the house and the final plan for the garden. 35% of the plot is taken up by hardscaping and the house, a large portion of the remainder is left to allow the stunning Greek wildflowers to flourish and spread. There is some slightly more formal planting around the house, but with a very simple range of local plants, all flowering either blue or white - except for the brightly coloured bougainvillea on the main terrace.

As well as producing around 200 litres of olive oil from the trees every year, we have planted productive almond trees, a small vineyard (about 150 bottles a year - we are working on the quality!), citrus trees and two vegetable plots, providing all our needs for about 8 months of the year. This fits in with the low energy principals of the house design.

Both house and garden are designed for year round living, rather than concentrating on the summer months. This year, however, Spring has come late to Corfu.

First pin - turning off the coast road at Aphrodite Supermarket.

Second pin - take the right hand turn marked "Katavolos"

Keep on “main” tarmac’d road - you will eventually see some bins on right just before you take a hairpin to left. (Don't be tempted to go down the turn off on the right leading downhill.)

Just after the bend you will go past the turn-off marked to Katavolo House.

Keep going through a hamlet and past “The Bakery” villa on your left.

When road looks as if it transitions into more of a track keep going and shortly you will see Sarah’s House on the right Third pin

There is parking at end of and along the drive. Please try not to block others in.
