Sculpture Garden

Pikoukatika / Gastouri

Our garden is between Pikoulatika and Gastouri. We bought the house in November 2025 having fallen in love with it and it's 4 stremma of natural garden.

The house was built and formerly owned by the renowned German Artist Gerald Matzner and his wife Rena Matzner. Together, with a local architect they created a beautiful light filled space. We love how the large French doors connect to the garden. We feel very lucky to be the current custodians and want to be respectful of their artistic legacy.

The garden they created is a natural terrain of rocks and trees and very much in keeping with the Corfiot landscape. There are around 30 of Gerald Matzner's sculptures freestanding within the plot and many more embedded into the fabric of the building.

The sculptures are made from fired red clay "which gives an earthy and fossil-like appearance" a few are painted. They vary in size from life sized geckos to slightly larger than life people. They certainly provoke mixed reactions and discussion, which we think was his intention.

We are enjoying the garden as it is while we see what emerges in the coming seasons. Also we are novice gardeners and need time to learn. Any tips would be welcomed.

Over the coming years we intend to include more seating areas, parking, and set up systems for composting and harvesting the plentiful rainwater. We hope to grow vegetables and drought resistant flowers.

The sloping plot has been slightly terraced using stones from the land. We recommend sturdy shoes to explore all the sculptures which are located throughout the garden.

Refreshments and snacks will be available for those who would like to linger a while.

Donations to the Melissa charity chosen by the festival would be appreciated - please bring cash! We look forward to welcoming you.

Drinks and snacks available. Again, we should really appreciate donations to Melissa, which is such a deserving charity in Corfu Town.

Directions & Parking:
If using Google Maps, stick to the main route it suggests, as the alternative is a dead end!

You can access the Sculpture garden from either the Perama coast road or the Kerkiras - Achilleion road (Praktiker shop is on this road).

Coming from the north on the coast road, turn right at the Golden Alexandros hotel (turn left here if coming from the south), signposted Achilleion, Gastouri. Head uphill and inland and follow the road for 1.4km, here take a sharp right turn, signposted Loubertos. After a few hundred metres take the first left turn, down a fairly steep hill ( again signposted Loubertos). Follow the road round to the right at the next junction, and we are 200m along on the right.

From the Praktiker road, if coming from town direction, take the first turning on the left after Diellas supermarket. There is a small bus stop/ shelter on the corner. If coming from Gastouri direction turn right at the bus stop/ shelter which is just after Proton supermarket, on the left hand side.

Follow the narrow lane and take the second left turn up a hill, signposted Loubertos, Gastouri, Perama. Take this road and follow it. The road takes a sharp right and a steep uphill. Go up the hill, past the house with a red wall, and then a hedge, which is us. The hill levels out and our house is on the left.

We have parking for a few cars on our land if it is dry, but the driveway is unmade so if you don't have a 4wd or don't feel confident on rough surfaces there is parking on the road very close by. Please be considerate of our neighbours when parking.
