Avra House

Between Kouloura and Kalami

In 1974 the owners bought the land on a hillside with 36 olive trees and a 360 degree view of Kalami Bay, Albania and Corfu town.

When the house was completed in 1979, the only plantings were oleanders lining the drive (which at that time stopped before the present pool area) as well as along the back terrace, with plumbago in the planter below the front terrace and some pine trees along the perimeters of the property.

n the early 2000s, Dominique Benier undertook an expansion and some alterations to the house. He also designed and built the pool and the pool house. At that time the drive was extended uphill to the car park area above the house. Dominque landscaped these areas with new plantings both below the pool, around the pool house, and elsewhere.

More recently, Jennifer Gay landscaped and planted the previously bare area north-east of the house. She also oversaw the pruning of the olive and other trees on the land and installed an irrigation system.

Recently more plants have been added to the ‘native’ planting on the east side of the house.

Parking & Directions:

Going North through Gimari and Kendroma, turn right towards Kouloura and Kalami. At the bottom of the hill, do not take the left turn-off to Kouloura but bear right, for Kalami. Avra is the first house above the road, about 100 meters after passing the Kouloura turn off.

There is a large parking area at the top of the drive.
